Heavy Plant & Equipment Hire

TLB Hire Johannesburg, Plant Hire Alberton & Boksburg: Heavy Equipment on Daily and Contract Rates

Most plant hire companies in Johannesburg either own one type of machine or only pass your enquiry along. Elchom Group does both properly. We rent out our own fleet, and where a site needs more than we have free, we act as primary contractor and bring in vetted subcontractors, so you deal with one company, one quote and one invoice. This model has been proven on commercial sites in Melrose Arch and Craighall Park. Because our plant dispatches from Alberton-North, mobilisation to Boksburg, the East Rand and Greater Johannesburg is fast. For the full picture of what we do, see Elchom Group.

Pricing Rules Note: All baseline rates exclude VAT, and TLB/compressor hire rates exclude lowbed delivery to site (R5,000 flat) and site establishment (R1,200 flat) unless stated on your formal quote. Wet and dry hire options are quoted according to project requirements

the site, breaking what’s in the way, and taking the waste off your hands.

Site Clearing, Grubbing & Site Establishment

Before any trenching or building starts, the ground has to be cleared and the site set up. We handle clearing, grubbing and site establishment for commercial and esidential projects. Site establishment is a R1,200 flat fee. Where heavy vegetation or large trees stand in the way, we link this work to our tree felling in Johannesburg team so one contractor can clear the full footprint.

Mechanical Rock Breaking vs. Non-Explosive Chemical Rock Blasting

Mechanical rock breaking works well in open areas. In urban sites, tight trenches and next to live services, vibration and flyrock become a problem. That is where non-explosive chemical rock blasting comes in: the compound expands in drilled holes and splits the rock with zero flyrock and minimal vibration, so it can be used in confined spaces and near live utilities. Chemical rock breaking in South Africa is rarely offered with the plant to drill and clear the rock afterwards.
We supply both. The compound is R950 per box, and you can also buy it direct as a stock item through rock breaking chemicals Pair it with our heavy-duty compressor (R6,200/day) for drilling.

Controlled Building Demolitions.

Elchom Group takes on controlled demolitions of commercial and residential structures, from single walls and slabs to whole buildings. As demolition contractors in Johannesburg, we combine the demolition with rubble removal and site clearing, so you are not coordinating three suppliers. Demolition is quoted per site after we assess the structure, access
and waste volumes

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Frequently Asked Questions About Plant Hire & Civil Works in Gauteng

How much does it cost to hire a TLB for an hour or a day in Johannesburg?

The market hourly wet rate for a TLB in Johannesburg is roughly R350–R450 per hour. For most site jobs a daily or contract rate works out cheaper. Elchom Group hires TLBs at R5,000–R5,200 per day on a short 2-day hire, R3,500 per day on a 4-day contract, and R3,000 per day on a 5-day contract. We dispatch from Alberton-North to Johannesburg, Boksburg, Sandton, Midrand and Pretoria. All rates exclude VAT, lowbed delivery (R5,000 flat) and site establishment (R1,200 flat) unless stated on your formal quote. Call Mike on +27 78 978 6907 to book. See our TLB hire rates above for the full breakdown.

What is the cost of site preparation and site clearing?

Site establishment is a R1,200 flat fee (excluding VAT). Site clearing and grubbing are quoted according to the size of the site, the type of vegetation and the access for machines. Where large trees need to come down first, we link the job to our tree felling team so one contractor clears the whole footprint. Send us the site address and size, or call Mike on +27 78 978 6907, and we will price it for Johannesburg, Alberton, Boksburg, Sandton, Midrand or Pretoria.

How much does it cost to hire a tipper truck and do rubble removal per load?

Rubble removal is R1,300 per load (excluding VAT) across Johannesburg, Alberton, Boksburg, Sandton, Randburg and Pretoria. This covers building rubble and bulk site waste from construction and renovation work. Tipper truck hire (6m³ and 10m³) for bulk earthworks haulage is quoted per day or per load, depending on distance, material and duration, through Elchom’s fleet and partner network. Call Mike on +27 78 978 6907 with the site address and load size, or request a formal quote.

What is chemical rock blasting and how much does it cost?

Chemical rock blasting uses a non-explosive compound that expands inside drilled holes and splits the rock. There is zero flyrock and minimal vibration, which makes it suitable for urban sites, confined spaces, and trenches near live utilities where explosives or heavy mechanical breaking are not an option. The compound is R950 per box (excluding VAT). Drilling is typically done with a heavy-duty compressor, which we hire at R6,200 per day. To buy boxes as a stock item, see rock breaking chemicals or call Natasha on +27 61 529 5417. For rock breaking on site, call Mike on +27 78 978 6907.
